Five questions worth asking before anaesthesia
A calm pre-anaesthetic conversation helps turn uncertainty into a plan. Here are the questions that give patients the most useful answers.
Before surgery, most people do not need more information. They need the right information. A short conversation with the anaesthesia team can make the day clearer and less intimidating.
Ask what type of anaesthesia is being considered, what you should do with your usual medicines, when you need to stop eating and drinking, how pain will be managed afterwards, and what details from your history may change the plan. Bring a written list of medicines and previous anaesthetic experiences so nothing important is left to memory.
The best question is often the simplest one: what should I expect next? A good answer gives you a sequence, names the decisions still to be made, and shows you who to ask when something changes.
